Does anyone one know of a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote that is something along the lines of "What we need the most is someone to show us what we are good at". I can't find what was originally said!! Thanks for any help!

I have spent ages looking for this quote, tried all the usual sources. I know it exists because I have it German : "Das, was wir am meisten brauchen, ist ein Mensch, der uns dazu bringt, das zu tun, wozu wir fähig sind. " But I don't want to translate it myself, I would rather have an "official" version.......

What I need most is someone to make me do what I can.

I thought it was from the essay, "Friendship," but apparently I am remembering that wrong. I find this quoted often, but I cannot find the source. It is freqently used as an epigraph or motto, but without attribution of the source.

It is also quoted in each of the following forms:

What I most need is someone to make me do what I can.

What most I need is someone to make me do what I can.
