We have a small pond with a fountain in our yard and its infested with tadpoles, but we dont want to kill the koi fish...........HELP!!

we've tried scooping them but there are thousands of them so the fish cannot eat them all. It cannot be covered to keep them out its just two big for that, not to mention it would take away from the "look". It is a pond and waterfall that we had installed to add to the landscaping in the yard. We are trying to avoid having to move the fish to avoid shocking them. Shooting them with a BB gun wouldn't work because the BBs are almost as big as them, but thanks for that suggestion.

Why do you want to get rid of them? They can't hurt your fish, the may eat some and the others will eat algae and small insects in the water like mosquito larva. They will soon morph into frogs and then they will eat more bugs. I don't see the down side here for keeping the tadpoles!

You can try scooping the tadpoles out but you probably can't get them all. The next best thing to do is take out the koi and place them temporarily in a kiddie pool. Then put a quantity of biodegradable dishwashing liquid into the pool with the tadpoles. I don't know how big your pool is but you might start with a half-gallon gallon or two liters. It might take more, depending on the size of the pool. After the tadpoles die, flush the pool with clean water and return the koi.

The detergent should kill the tadpoles without being a lingering toxin for the koi. Be sure you flush the pool thoroughly, though.

Take out the koi fish and put them in a large bucket (with water of course!).

Drain the pond (start it by siphoning through a hose) and scrub it with bleach. Rinse it well several times and dry it with old towels to get all the bleach out. Refill the pond and put the fish back.

Put a screen of some kind over the pond so that frogs can't get back in the pond, or you'll have the same problem again soon.

I doubt the Tadpoles will be there long! Your fish will eat many of them, soon they will be off. Its not advisable to drain your pond, and wash with bleach as suggested. If you have a fine net,you can get some out that way,to lighten the load, perhaps a neighbour may have a pond? Other than that, there's not much else you can do.

You wont ever get rid of them and not sure why you would want to. They are probably toad tadpoles judging by the numbers you describe. One day you will wake up to thousands of pencil lead tip sized toads jumping around your pond. Only about 2% of them will survive and then next year they will lay the eggs in your pond again and the cycle continues. They are harmless and they even eat the junk in your pond that you do not want to be there. Welcome to country living. I dont do anything with them and in my pond I have about a million of them in my pond. Litterally.

leave them...the koi will eat what they can...and in a few weeks the little buggers will be frogs...and they eat all kinds of bugs...

if you really can't stand them.....get a net and scoop them out...you won't get them all...but you'll get a lot
