As someone that had one a couple months ago, I can give some info that was given to me by my dr. Recovering from a hysterectomy takes time. You will stay in the hospital from one to two days for postsurgery care. Some women may stay in the hospital up to four days. I stayed the night my surgery was done, and then two days after it was done. During the hospital stay they make you get up and walk so that you arent stiffened up in bed the whole time. I had mine done on an emergency basis due to an outpatient surgery not going quite as planned. I had a thermal ablation to treat endometriosis and my uterus started bleeding. I had a total hysterectomy (thats where they remove the uterus and cervix)
Abdominal. Complete recovery usually takes four to eight weeks. You will gradually be able to increase your activities.
Vaginal or laparoscopic. Most women are able to return to normal activity in one to two weeks.
For both, by the sixth week, you should be able to take tub baths and resume sexual activities.
It took me 3 weeks to be able to walk straight (upright) and it took me 4 weeks to be able to cough and sneeze without holding a pillow over my incision site. You will need to take the pain meds as prescribed because the pain is awful if you have it done abdominally like I did. It took me 8 weeks to be able to resume sex on doctors orders, but it took me 6 weeks to be able to resume everything else. For the first 6 weeks (before post op appointment) you arent allowed to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. Recovery time for me wasnt so bad once I figured out ways to move around without hurting myself-slept on a couch close to a chair and table so I could lift up off the couch holding them. It will hurt for awhile. IF you have it done abdominally, you will have a scar that will get red and bumpy, but dont be alarmed its just healing and it will fade and get smooth over time (I was told 3 months by my dr). for more info feel free to contact me.

6 months to a year. It also depends on your age and why you had the hysterectomy and if you had a partial or total one. State of mind and attitude are important for a good recovery.

I should know since I had one 3 years ago. The first week is difficult to get out of bed and to cough, but I was ready to return to work in 4 weeks (I am a nurse), but my GYN made me stay out 6 weeks. I was bored!!! Good luck, it is the most liberating thing!

Everyone heals at a different rate. I have known women who were bac to normal in 3 weeks while others take 8 weeks.
