I just bought 2 Oranda goldfish on Sunday. The only is pretty active, the other is active only when there is food to be eaten. (otherwise, he sits at the bottom of the tank) He is decently fat. Is his immobility due to the fact that he's fat? Or, could it be some other underlaying problem? I have fed them peas today to help their digestive system.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it is a 30 gal. tank, the water has been up and running 5 days before the fish were added, and the active fish is about 4 inches from head to fin, and the other is about 4 1/2 to 5 from head to fin. He may just be bloated, but the fish had the same apprearance at the pet store... didn't think anything of it at the time.

Most likely he's constipated, or has a swim bladder condition. (Or he's got dropsy, but we will just skip that as it's 99% lethal even if you treat it.) I'd stop feeding them for 2 days. Then cook some peas, and peal them. Feed them the peas. This should flush their digestive tracks. Some cases of swim bladder disorder are caused by congested digestive tracks.

Be sure that you are keep the water clean. If a gold fish tank smells bad the water is bad. Do a 20-30% water change asap.

Are you only feeding once a day what they can eat in 2 minutes? Goldfish will eat until they die, and over feed is the #1 cause of gold fish death.

Goldfish is cute, pretty and attractive which I cannot deny but, don't you know that they will eat anythings and everythings that they can find as food? They should eat little and they will always eat very hungrily ever though they are full already cos fishes have small and poor digestion stomach. Maybe you should fast them for a few days and see. Bloated stomach or constipation will cause them to sink to the bottom, unable to swim properly and they may have die of not enough oxygen.

How big are the fish? How big is their tank? There are a many reasons why the fish could be sitting at the bottom of the tank, including body conformation issues (his fattness, etc.) Your best bet is to call a vet or even an aquarium-specialties store that deals with orandas.

i bought 2 lion heads on saturday and it took them 2 days to become active and to start eating. they were doing the same as your 2. make sure the water is ok , by this i mean that its not water straight from the tap, it has to be aged for a period of 5 days or so with the filter on. they are fine now though, eating everything, keep an eye on them, id say they will be ok, they are a hardy enough breed, good luck.
