My car got hit today from behind while I was waiting for a parking spot today. No one was hurt, it was totally his fault and the only damage was some paint scrapped off from my car. I was wondering what procedure I was supposed to take.

Good thing I did all the wrong things. I hope this guy is a good man. Shoot. I never even thought of calling the cops.

If no one was hurt and there was minimal damage you can generally just exchange information and call your insurance companies take pictures of the scene and go on your way

The first thing you need to do is call a police officer to investigate the matter. Even though this isnt always necessary this tends to solidify who was at fault. Many times insurance companies will encourage their policy holders to not admit fault regardless of how obvious it was. When you have an official police report stating so, then there is less confusion. The officer will take the information from both parties and then you can later get a copy of the police report (once it has been submitted and processed by the police dept) and submit it with your claim.

If you do not use the services of a police officer, make sure that you get complete information from the other person- Get the information from both the drivers license and registration and provide them with yours. If the other driver fails to cooperate, get the tag number of the other vehicle and then immediately call the police.

Some states require that you call the police and they make out a report. Others you can just exchange information. But carry a camera along to take photos of the damage. I think having a police report would be more protection since the other person could not claim more damage to themselves or the vehicle. Last accident I was in a policeman rear ended me. I was not hurt but I did scold him and tell him to be more careful next time.

You call the non-emergency number for the police department and have them come out to do a report. You were in a parking lot so you weren't blockinh traffic however if you were in the road, try to get your car off the road and wait for the police to arrive.

Call the cops, then exchange insurance info, and never admit fault..
Just because you don't seem hurt at the time, doesn't mean that there isn't something that can pop up later.
