A fan would be the way to go. However, cutting holes in walls not advisible unless you
1. Know what is inside the wall you want to cut.
2. Know the framing layout for the wall
They sell fans that install in the upper corner of doors that don't involve extensive installation, if the rooms in question share a doorway or cased opening.
If you must cut a hole between the rooms:
1. Be sure there are no wires or pipes running up through the wall
(are there outlets near the area where you want to cut? Is there
a bathroom or sink, etc. on the floor above.)
2. Determine the framing layout of the wall.
(this can be done by using a stud finder. studs are normally placed 14 1/2 inches apart [16 in. on center] , so you can take that into consideration when locating a suitable place for a pass-through.)
3. Make the inital cut just over 1/2 in. deep to verify steps 1&2 if your walls are sheetrock. 5/8 if plaster and 5/8 if paneling over sheetrock
(this will allow you to cut through the wall, but won't penetrate into the wall cavity
