Also assume that the future, for the most part, turned out RIGHT and didn't completely go to crap, meaning that civilization did NOT fall into utter ruin.

As you live in this assumed future, what do you USE to get from Point A to Point B? It doesn't have to be a car or other vehicle, be as imaginative and *detailed* as you like. :) Just try to describe as completely as you can, *what* you'd use and *how* it works. No one-liners please, use your heads.....and earn your points.

I would probably use a small motorcycle for everyday transportation. I would expect it to have either an efficient gasoline (or possibly bioethanol) engine in the 250 cc range, or a diesel, but electric power is a possiblity. These things already work pretty well for normal transportation in rural areas like where I live - they don't have the difficulties of mass transit in a sparsely populated area, and get around 60-70 mpg with existing technology. I'd like my future one to get a hundred or more.

I will probably use public transit. Buses, trains and subways and what not. As energy demand goes up this will make these things more appealing. I think this will lead to the US creating a good public transit system in more cities.

Though since i am planing on being a astronautic engineer i may use that space elevator they are planing to build to get to work. though i think that is more then 20 years off right now. The will probably have started construction in the next 20 years. That would be kind of neat.

OK well I won't be riding it 20 years from now because i plan to retire by then. I will probably be working as a science teacher in a public school and taking public transit to get there. Got to do something with your time when you plan to retire sort of young. if i take a vacation into space i will take a rocket or the space elevator if they have the second one done by then.

I would have the PeopleMover III. It is a variation of the PeopleMover 2. People would have small mercury filled aluminum "platelets" that are about the size of a POG. (do you remember those?) aka "milkcap"
The basic system would come with 3 platelets that you could place anywhere you wanted to go. An ideal setup would be to keep one at home, one at work and one at McWalbucks (McD's, walmart, and starbucks combined) at the platelet arrival dock. there would also be a handheld piece to set the destination. You could buy more platelets to place wherever you like. You could mail one to your friend in Austria so you could go there for the weekend. For the lazy people, you could put one at the top and bottom of the stairs. The possibilities are endless.
These are of course a high end commodity. You may be thinking that McWalbucks is not high end. Wrong! They also bought out Pier 1, Red Lobster, BMW, and most stores such as GAP and Abercrombie but those did not get put in the name. Think about it....McRedbucksmartmbieMW1 would not be nearly as snappy of a name.
MIT is now doing testing on the PeopleMoverXL 4.3. It is supposed to be able to let you take your children or pets with you.
OK, that is about it.

Hi;
I only know what I grew up with in my life & what suggestions were made on tv as far as future transportation goes & i don't see that happening in the next 20 yrs. I still see gas generated transportation 70to80% in 20 yrs. Because Of the pollution is very much out of control I would like to see bikcycles as the main transportation If not a law. I do believe we will destroy this planetin yrs to come & the U.S. is the most abusive country of all.

I would like to have the ability to teleport my self from one place to another. Just think where I want to go and then be there without ended up in a wall or in another person. But i would think 20 years from now I would still have this same old truck I drive.

I don't think I would use one of those contraptions that you see on Star Trek...I forget what its called..but I don't like the idea of having my body being cut up in microscopic pieces and then having it transported somewhere else. What I would like to have is my own spacecraft. Not anything big...like the one that George Jetson would have. It would be small and fast. But that's only for short distance travel. For long distance, like going to my favorite city in Paris, I would love to have my very own concord-type aircraft with all types of amenities. Aaaaaah, so nice to dream!
