First, don't stress!

First the doc will ask you some questions regarding your cycle and any complaints you might have, before starting the procedure.

And no, a pelvic exam shouldn't hurt. You will probably feel a little pressure when the doc inserts and opens the speculum and maybe a little stinging sensation when they swab the cervical entrance for the cancer screening (which in turn may produce a little bit of spotting), but for the most part you should NOT have any discomfort. If you do feel pain, tell your doc IMMEDIATELY and they will correct what they're doing to make you less uncomfortable.

The doc will also do a "digital" exam (feel the inside of your vaginal canal with their fingers) and press on your lower abdomen to feel for your fundus (top of the uterus) and your ovaries.

The entire procedure should take less than 10 minutes (from the time the doc walks in to the time they walk out).

BTW, you should also expect a manual breast exam by the doc, so don't be freaked out about that either.

When should you do it? As soon as you become sexually active. Or if you have reached the age of 16 and still not gotten your 1st period. Or if you have repetitive urinary tract infections or yeast infections. After that, you should have an annual exam and PAP smear done.

(Added tip - wear some socks. I don't know about you, but when I get anxious, my feet get cold, it might look a little silly wearing socks & a little paper "gown" but it helps keep those toes warm! Also, try to take deep breaths & not get tensed up, as it will only make it more uncomfortable.)

No, it doesn't hurt, it may feel a little weird, but not pain. If it hurts, you should tell the doctor because that means there could be a problem, such as infection, etc. There shouldn't be any blood either. I got my first one when I was 18 years old. It literally takes about 2 maybe 3 minutes to do one, it's over before you know it. I was VERY nervous the first time I got mine. My friend had me thinking it was going to be painful. A friend of mine went in there with me. While I was looking at her, in a matter of minutes, it was over and I hardly felt anything. I couldn't believe how quick and painless it was. Trust me you have nothing to be scared of. Here is a site link from women's health services for you to look at that should give you all the information you need. Good luck, and just remember......breath in and breath out.....nothing to worry about, just remember to relax during the exam and it'll be over in no time!

How old when you need it? If you are sexually active or I would say when you turn 18?
Special Tips: Make sure you use your little paper cover thing to really wipe away ALL of the lube. Try to get rid of as much of it as possible before getting dressed. Otherwise, you will be slick for a while.

At 16, my mom found out that I started having sex with my bf. She told me we were going to the GYN to get a pap and get on bcp. So, I did. I was a nervous wreck...been every year since then. Now, I'm 30 and think NOTHING of it. It's uncomfortable...mostly b/c there are two people (doc and nurse) staring at your spread eagle legs and carrying on mindless banter to make it more comfortable. They examine the outside, then s/he sticks a few fingers in and mashes on lower tummy to feel ovaries. Then, s/he puts in a device with light on end of it only as far as a tampon goes, takes a long cutip thing and scrapes your cervix...that's a little uncomfortable, but it's only a few scrapes...takes everything out, helps you sit back up and tells you to put your clothes back on...simple. OH, and you might get a breast exam prior to pap...just some mashing around on bare breasts as you lay back...not a big deal.

SOME, even insert a finger in the anus for a check for hernias or to check uterus or something???? I've never been to one like that...but, it does happen...

GL!

Fun Lovin' Girl gave you a really good answer. All that I want to add is that if you try to relax as much as possible (yeah right!) it's less uncomfortable, and that if your doc is a male you have the right to have another female (like a nurse) in the room during the exam if it makes you feel more comfortable.

It can be a little uncomfortable but it's not that bad. Young women usually get it when they either go on the pill or at about age 18. Your doctor will tell you what he/she will do..just ask.
