I haven't watched a sitcom since the 80's because the have all sucked. Unless you consider "The Simpsons" to be a sitcom. That show is great.

The networks air shows that aren't very sophisticated because the advertisers want a younger audience. Supposedly, it's the younger demographic that has the most disposable income - or their parents disposable income. Just look at the commercials during a sit-com - it's mostly ads about fast-food, snack food, soft drinks, text messaging, cell phones, clothes..... basically anything that is most likely to be used by younger people. It's just a symptom of our ultra-greedy culture. Unfortunately, the lack of quality entertainment is the price of this greed.

It's sad that they just don't make shows like Cheers, M*A*S*H*, Three's Company, Barney Miller, The Andy Griffith Show, Dick Van Dyke, All In The Family and WKRP In Cincinnati, anymore.

I think it's because writers think that people are getting dumber and dumber and are willing to watch any crap they put on TV (which is unfortunate, but it's true). More and more people like watching things like reality TV because their lives are too boring so they feel they need to infringe onto other lives. But that's not really the writers fault though. So many ideas have been done already it would be hard to not repeat the same concept that another show had. That's why I think reality TV is huge, because it's brand new and hardly a repeat. So yeah, that could be why they don't make any good funny sitcoms anymore.

Or Frasier? Or Mary Tyler Moore? Or Sonny and Cher (okay, that would be tough since he's no longer alive -- but wasn't it a great show?)
Yeah. The newer sitcoms seem to lack genuine humour. Take away the sound track laughter and there wouldn't be much left.

I guess because no one has been able to think of a new idea for a good funny sitcom all the good ideas have been taken

In general I agree with you - the only comedy shows I watch anymore are animated...with the exception of "That 70's Show," which I stumbled over on FX. It is very reminiscent of the shows you speak of - great characters, good laughs, and a good heart. It's on every night on FX - I suggest you check it out!

And tame compared to shows nowadays. I like George Lopez, Life According to Jim and Freddie. They are the least like Friends and Seinfield I can find.

Because "they" think all we want to watch is trash. That may be true for some, but personally it would be nice to watch some programs that use humor instead of stupidity!
