If they had achieved the ability for interstellar travel, I would expect them to be ambitious, curious, have a social structure, and be constantly dissastisfied. They would have to be dependent on something for food, the only difference between consumption and parasitism is a parasite retains an advantage in keeping its host alive. A species that achieved interstellar travel, I imagine, would've found a substitute.
As far as alien life that is still bound to its home planet: anything goes. Heck, they could be siliconje or methane-based: We might not even recognize it as life.

I think the universe is peppered with life. Life is a biproduct of time and energy over vast spanses of time. Life is by its nature selfish within restraints that are also.. selfish!.. Humans broke the mold so to speak, by behaving in such a widespread destructive manner, and I'd expect that the same has happened elsewhere. That life on most planets fails in the sense that one organism dominates and wreaks havoc.
If aliens that were advanced enough to travel to earth, were peaceful, I don't think they'd bother. In fact, I don't think peaceful creatures would bother developing technology to that extent in the first place. Bhuddists aren't racing to make technological advancements for example. Peaceful creatures have a different set of objectives in my opinion.
If aliens ever make it to earth I'd expect them to be as uncontrollably rotten to the core as people are, and to treat us much like we treat lab rats. However, I think the most likely visitors to earth would be along the lines of artificially intelligent probes or robots sent by parasitic aliens. Or perhaps weapons.
I think we'll destroy ourselves before we get to see aliens or their creations. It sure would be interesting though.

I would have to beleive that there will be some peaceful races and some parasitic races.
But it would be much harder to guess what they might look like, and if they could survive on earth, and things like that.

Its a rhetorical question, because there is no proof of alien existance. That's like asking, "If Joe Blow's great great great grandmother was a wild animal, would she be more like a lion or like a bear?"

I have a feeling life exsists in every possible form, so both, it's only a matter of where.
