I have a 97 dodge ram with a 12 valve cummins motor. I had somthing shoot out of the timing gears and through the cover. everyone tells me that it was a dowel pin but dont know where or what its for. the motor still runs fine but I would still like to know what the pin once did just in case it dies on me in the future.

I dont know about a dowel but its something has caused it.There's not much spare room inside the timing chest so it could be a dowel or a nut but I would strip it down to find out what it was.
