There are many various reasons why people commit crime.
Greed, jealousy, hate, lack of parental guidence. Yes, poverty,
if everyone were equal, some nut would STILL want to do harm
or some crime. Drugs are a big problem too. Crime will always
be around, as long as we humans are. Or until, Our Lord Jesus
comes.

"Dear telcomcorp1, An estimated 585,000 felons will be released from state and federal prisons this year -- and 62 percent will be charged with new crimes, according to the Justice Department. Clearly, they were not rehabilitated.
Most specialists in criminology believe in the power of counseling, therapy and training, or education and jobs to set ex-cons on the right track. But psychologist Stanton Samenow, author of "Straight Talk About Criminals," holds that such efforts are misguided because they start with the premise that criminals are hapless victims of disadvantaged circumstances who just need more understanding and resources. Criminals cannot be restored or "rehabilitated" to something they never were.
Samenow holds that people become criminals through conscious choice and they emerge from all kinds of environments.
Criminals are unprincipled predators and victimizers who injure others in pursuit of excitement and ego gratification, he believes.
"Habilitation" means changing the way the offender thinks so that he functions responsibly -- not simply tinkering with his social conditions.
Legal leverage helps to provide vulnerability. The threat of bad consequences stimulates motivation to change. No one contends that the process is not demanding, time-consuming and expensive. But some people with a criminal personality are not willing to change. So prisons exist to protect society from their destructiveness.

A blend of Nature, Nurture and Environment.
Not all can be blamed on society, as there have been "well off" "well mannered" children who have committed horrible acts.
Jeffery Dahlmer
Menendez Brother (rich kids)
Nature as in bio-chemical imbalances, mental illness, genetic influences
Nurture, attachment in early life, trust issues, Independence are key, abuse and neglect are imprinted as abandonment at a early age
Environment growing up in a culture of crime, poverty, addiction, lack of consequences, role models activity in crime

i think that having laws and rules and regulations is great in theory. but, also, what it does is point out What Not to Do. it's human nature is to occasionally try and break those laws, try to get by, try to gain something without truly deserving it.
i actually learned this in bible study recently..! :)
laws point out what Not to do
knowing those laws pushes us to try and Break them
we get Punished for breaking the laws when caught
think of the speed limit... it was 55 before. what did we do? we drove 65! ooh, fast! don't get caught...! now they've changed it to 65...what do we do? we drive 75-80!! WHY??? why can't we follow the rules all the time? it's weird.
therefore, we do need the Punishment in order to discourage people from doing the wrong thing. however, this doesn't always work. people continue to break the laws. so, coupled with punishment, we also need Rehabilitation. help and encouragement to be Better. be Positive. be Healthy. Helpful and a Positive impact on society. i believe promoting that in our children and in ourselves, to constantly seek the Good in life, in order to become Better...regardless of our past mistakes, of ignorance, of bad luck... we can make a change in the our lives and for our future. knowing that can bring Joy into a lot of people, instead of hopelessness. a lot of people have no hope that they can change their lives, and they settle for a life of crime, stealing, using. but if they are encouraged to always learn more, strive more, achieve more, and learn from their mistakes, i think we can help people WANT to do good, not just to escape punishment.

Some people are born with criminal minds.
Some just gave it a try.
Most felt GOOD to be bad.
Its in our gene. Its just a matter of DO or DON'T.
