You need to set a password

"Who needs WPA or WEP when with a good router password, disabling the SSID broadcast and enabling MAC filering would keep anyone out. Why add another verification to the process which would only add more traffic to the network?"

-Because a hidden network isn't hidden to a hacker, or even some wireless applications, and mac addresses can be captured and mimicked a lot easier than cracking WPA.

WPA is highly recommended, and WEP is good enough if your key is long and random, or you're just generally unlikely to get a decent enough hacker in range.

Get into the WAP (router or wireless device) and enable the WEP protection and use a HEX 64 or 128 bit encryption.

ex.

64bit: 1234567890
128bit: 12345678901234567890123456

Nientech- No, disabling SSID will do nothing to stop a halfway determined access attempt. And breaks a lot of wireless devices.
And you've never heard of spoofing a mac address?

For average home users, you need:

-strong router password
-WPA-PSK
-no DHCP enabled on the router
-MAC filtering
-Auditing

For corporate user, 802.1x, RADIUS (AAA)-

this is where the wireless router has a security key for encryption of data traffic as it floats through the air
