People watching and the news. Works every time for me.
Its amazing how strangers assumed emotions in public can bring about imaginations of how their current lives must be. Makes for interesting writing.
Oh, and dreams, i have a lot of great stories i have written that were nothing more than a series of dreams ive had.

There are so many.
Brain-storming actually means getting a GROUP together and throwing out a bunch of ideas.
But, for fun, I have a friend walk around my house and pick up 4 random items: a hat, a toothpick, a book, an envelope, for instance, and then I write a story using them.
I write down 4 numbers, flip through a magazine and point to a word or ad or picture on that page, and have to relate those 4 things together.
For a game, I take nouns and verb and adjectives, and put them in 3 seperate boxes. Then I draw them out and have to create a story from them.

In Creative Writing, there is such a thing as a 'freewriting exercise,' where you scribble just about anything and everything that comes into your mind for a short period of time (about 30 mins). After your time is up, you read what you have written and usually you find a line or two or even just a few words that you can use as a good subject/starting point in order to build an essay, story, etc.

Open a magazine. Don't read the articles, just scan for words that pop out at you and circle them. Try to think of topics that have something to do with those words or the words connected. Think outside the box.

Pick a main character in you story, pick a totally unrelated place/scenario for them to be in, write down ideas on what would have to happen in your story for a connection to be made between the first two items.
This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out your characters and give you insight into what may happen to them in you real story…

Think about what you know about anything. Think of ideas from other books that you like. Go outside and see what the world has to offer. Is there something you can base it on that has really happened?

Start with an image. Close your eyes and see what pops up. Then think about what circumstances might cause that image, and what it in turn might cause. Then start writing. Planning too much will kill your momentum.
