The American Buffalo is correctly called a Bison. Buffalo is just another name. I believe the scientific name is Bison Bison. There are other species of buffalo in other lands.

Bison are the large North American plains animal commonly called buffalo.
There are, however, other species of buffalo throughout Europe and Asia, none of which are related to the American bison.
So for instance, in Italy you can get a cheese made from buffalo milk (mozzarella di bufalo) which is NOT made from bison milk, but from the milk of the European buffalo. And in the southeast corner of the African continent, you are more likely to get killed by a Cape buffalo than by a lion, but neither one is a bison.

Actually, buffalo and bison are the same thing! Bison is the real name for the animal, but buffalo is another name for "Bison."
