If your definition of an "invention" is an item that was created strictly by man to perform a given task as opposed to forces of nature we have tamed (electricity or fire) or something that is fundamental to our very nature (art), then my vote goes to the plough.

The plough is not flashy like the latest electronic gadget or even as common in today's life as an automobile. What the plough did was make civilization possible.

Before we had the first rudimentary plough, humans were a nomadic people, we hunted and we gathered. All our time was spent simply trying to survive. The plough allowed us to grow our own food.

What the plough gave us was time, stability, and efficiency. The time it gave us allowed us to create art and develop the first scientific principles. It made it easier to survive by giving us a stable food supply. It allowed us to create farms where the same piece of land could feed an ever increasing population. None of mankind's greatest accomplishments could ever have been attained if it wasn't for the food supply we owe to the simple plough.

So, the next time you send an email, make a cell phone call, or ride to the store in your car, remember that if we still had to go out and hunt all day, everyday, just to eat, none of these things we take for granted would have ever existed if it wasn't for the plough.

Language should be considered as one of the greatest inventions of all time. Several people have listed writing, or the written word, but that stems from language. Language is the basis of communication, and the exchange of ideas and information.

PS. Peace, Love Tranquility etc are not really inventions, rather they are states of being

It would be the common ordinary plow. It alone has made it possible for mankind to build society to the level it is today. Once man had made enough for himself to eat and survive, then he could use the surplus to feed others. Then he had to communicate with fellow peoples to sell it and it goes on from there. Bartering services for food and then money came about for those woh didn't have the knowhow or the inclination to work in the fields to eat.

Soap, but not in my eyes.

Imagine everyone around you never having bathed with soap.

The whole world would be like France.

And the Nile was never dammed until the 60s when the Aswan was built.

Personally, I love many inventions and would rather not do without any of them, but for sheer convenience and consideration of what the alternative would be if they didn't exist :

The modern toilet.

See what I mean? Yeah... kinda gross if we didn't have these. So, best? -- not sure -- but most convenient, hellyeah...
