With 40 GB of memory, it's doubtful if you've used it all up...

So you can try these steps:

1. Go to tools, internet options, delete files.

2. Same menu, delete history.

3. Same menu - manage add-ons. Anything that does not support an application needs to be disabled.

4. If you don't have an anti-viral; get one. Tracking cookies, trojans, etc. can make your computer really slow.

5. Go out to the web and download the freeware file cleanup.exe. This will clean out all of your memory that is trash and free up a lot of memory. The first time I used it I regained over 500MB of memory.

6. Spend the 20 bucks or so and buy a registry cleaner. My initial run fixed over 1700 errors.

7. Upgrade your RAM. If you don't have at least 512 it's gonna be slow - especially on games & video.

If you are running Windows 98, Me, or XP use msconfig to disable any unnecessary startup programs... Click 'Start' > 'Run' > Type msconfig and click 'OK'

On the 'Startup' tab you will see items that are automatically starting up when your computer boots. Some of these are necessary and different on each computer so do a little research on each item and disable those you don't need.

As stated before adding more memory will always help, also defragment your hard drive frequently, and keep your computer free of viruses and spyware by running current/updated spyware and antivirus software.

Hope this helps...

If you want to make it faster you can get a better Intel Pentium III Processor like 1.4GHz also more Ram would help. On the software side older operating systems run faster because less resources is used by the OS. Secondly don't have so many programs running in the background uninstall some.

i would suggest a combination of the methods already given; deleting useless files (there are programs that do this, for you - try, "window washer"), checking for and deleting spyware, adware, malware, trojans, worms, viruses, and cetera (there are programs... see previous parenthetical expression - try, "avg free"). add RAM and another, or larger, hard drive, or have a reliable computer shop add them for you, and defragment your hard drive (the disk defragmenter can be reached by pressing window's start button, at the lower left of your screen, in a normal set-up, hovering the cursor over, "all programs", clicking, "accessoies", and, finally, hitting the, "disk defragmenter", button - whew!). however, if the one answerer is correct, and RAM cannot be added, nor a larger hard drive installed, look into a new computer - they're almost ridiculously inexpensive, now (as low as $200, for a name brand, tolerably up to date system - check newspaper ads, or just watch television commercials).

Well there are many ways to do so. If ur computer is VERY slow it perhaps means u have a virus. Just run a scan or so and see it that helps. If it doesnt the problem may be that you have way too much crap for your computer basically more than it can hold. So i suggest either back up ur files and re install ur os so u'll be super fast!

Drop it off a cliff. It will go really fast for a short period of time.

Sorry, I had to say that. What will likely make the most difference to you is to increase the amount of RAM you have. If you are running 256K RAM or less, you should increase that to at least 512k.

Compaqs are difficult to upgrade, they usually cannot be upgraded much more than what they ship with. I would suggest getting a new computer...it will be much better and a better deal than upgrading your old Compaq.

you can buy RAM and upgrade, but it's not worth it. You should just get a new computer. Look at Dell they are selling very cheap good computers for like under 400
