Guess I'm in the minority, but really nice pearls would do it for me. Pearls are classic and classy. They come in black and white so you can match any outfit. Pearls are never flashy and won't go out of style.
Diamonds are so typical plus, they are NOT rare. They are simply only released in small quantities by DeBeers and the like. If all the diamonds that have been mined were released into the market, diamonds would be about as valuable as dirt.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend.
Pearls make me think of very specific people - Marge Simpson, Jackie Kennedy, other politicians mentioned in this survey.
Diamonds are more universal I guess. My first association with diamonds is Matthew Maconahay (sp?) because of 'How to loose a guy in 10 days.' That's a way better association than Marge Simpson.

it depends on what style i'd be wearing or the look i want to achieve but overall... there is just something about the diamond!
