Kagome is a meaningless word. It's homophone can mean woven bamboo pattern, and it's the title of a children's song.

* n the series, Kagome's name is written with hiragana. And I've heard "kagome" is a type of bamboo weave, but there is also a Japanese children's song called "Kagome-Kagome". "Higurashi" gives an approximate meaning of "sunset", "nightfall". (lil info about the game, "kagome-kagome") The players (usually 5 or more) form a circle by holding the hands of adjacent players side by side, except for one player who squats at the center of the circle, covering his closed eyes with his hands. The players forming the circle then start to move, rotating around the center, while singing the following song together: Kagome Kagome, Kago no naka no tori wa, Itsu itsu deyaru? Yoake to ban ni. Tsuru to kame ga subetta, Ushiro no shoumen dare? which translates to: Kagome, Kagome, When does the bird inside the cage comes out? At dawns and evenings. Who is in front of the back where a crane and turtle slipped and fell? When the song ends, the circle also stops moving. Then the player inside the circle says who is behind him. If his guess is correct, that player can join the circle, exchanging the role with the one behind him. And the process is repeated... (info from http://www.wot-club.org.uk/Inuyasha/)

* Again, as you might hear in the "What does the name Inuyasha mean in Japanese?" question that I checked on Babel Fish again and Kagome said it just meant Kagome. Doing some further research on Ask Jeeves (URL: www.ask.com) I found that "Kagome" meant "woven bamboo pattern".

"Inuyasha," the name of the main character, roughly translates to "dog demon." "Inu" means "dog" - the exact meaning of "yasha" is a topic of debate, but is generally accepted to refer to a supernatural creature like a demon.

Kagome's name is written only in hiragana, the Japanese phonetic alphabet; since there are no kanji assigned to it, it does not actually carry its own meaning. However, it sounds like a word referring to a woven bamboo pattern. "Kagome" is also a nonsense sound featured prominently in a children's song.
