Asking americans in the US to express their opinion on how they're perceived abroad is like asking a pygmee what Claudia Schiffer thinks of the new Revlon eyeliner...
You should see how American diplomats, soldiers and employees live abroad. All stacked in in hermetic closed compounds, rarely coming out and getting everything coming in from the States; even the water. They don't mingle or make contact.
What people know about America is what they see on tv. And don't go thinking that people try to analyse or to make a difference between the Administration and the people. So, they mostly think what the local newspapers or television report. Here in Africa, most tv is French, thus...
If they still want to come over to the States, it's merely in a quest of money, of life. If you'd tell them 'bout the ghetto's and the homeless, they wouldn't believe it, 'cause there's always a cousin or niece living there and doing "very well". Of course, the immigree never says how poorly he lives and keeps on nurturing the American dream on his left behind family and friends... But don't think US is the sole destination; if you were to get more global news, you'd know about all the dead "promised land" seekers drowning or dying of thirst and hunger in trying to reach Spain, Italy, Greece, Malta or France.
Why they hate Americans ? Why should they love them ???

good question, and impossible to give a complete answer without writing a book, and delving deep into history
everybody needs somebody7thing to hate, just as they need somebody/thing to love
i guess some people need to hate america and americans
i used to be a seaman, and travelled a lot
i can honestly say that I never met an american that i hated....but i sure met a few that i fell in love with
you guys (girls) are among the most "open" in the world, and maybe that's the problem, that you're too open?
it's just a pity you have such a geek as president
ps. hello to the great lake ports (cleveland, toledo, detroit, chicago and duluth) where I had some great time

As the man said, some of my best friends are Americans. It's true that the Administration does things which tend to lead folk into hating all Yanks, but individual acts of atrocity by American troops, while far from typifying their nation, get massive media exposure world-wide and help to fuel the hatred amongst those who are shielded from the good things that America does.

I'm surprised by the number of people who actually put some thought into their answer and I do appreciate those of you abroad who chimed in.
The perplexing part is this, if everyone hates us why are we flooded each year with an ever increasing number of immigrants.
It reminds me of two things.
1. I believe what you do not what you say.
2. Actions speak louder than words.
I believe most non-Americans who are in an impoverished country see the US as a place where they can better themselves.
Those in "western" countries opinions vary as greatly as our own about their country.

American as a whole, are excellent people and by nature generous and friendly. The problem is with the leadership, they are a batch of nasty and arrogant people.I only hold Americans responsible for re-electing Bush .Once bitten twice shy but they accepted to be bitten time and again. Please sympathise with Americans that they have such an arrogant and Neocons leadership who cannot see beyond their nose.

Speaking as an English guy, the Americans appear rather arrogant and seem to think that their political system is the best, hence they try and impose it upon the Arabs, and it doesn't work Iraq is a prime example. The average Americans I have met have been really nice people. I think they are seen in a bad light as Bush appears to be trigger happy and a loose cannon, however we in the UK have to put up with that pratt Blair, who is just as bad if not worse so Brits are seen in a bad light too.

From an Englishman: the people tend to be OK but you have a dangerous dangerous bigoted and short-sighted environmentally catastrophic government.
Americans are perceived as being interested in money above all else.
The Hollywood films tend to be bland, and drown out local culture, which causes resentment.
Tourists abroad give good tips (which is good!) but tend to be pretty ignorant about anything non-American. This is the perception: there are many Americans who are lovely.

I believe some hate our guts mainly because we are what they don't want anyone to be, free! They require blind faith in their "god". Now when we say that the people of the world should have the right to believe as they choose we become the enemy that is breaking the hold that "blind faith" has on people. We want people to think for themselves, they want people to do as they are told. Its funny I don't see bin laden in a car packed with c-4 or artillery shells, I don't see him shooting at us with a AK-47. Some hate us but it is because they fear us, no not us but our way of thinking that is what threatens to change there way of life.
Then again there are others even in the middle east who love us and truly understand what we have accomplished for them. I wish I could give a detailed reason why freedom is so great but it is just one of those things that you wont fully grasp until you don't see it anymore.
As far as "who", that is like saying they don't have a choose to put a bomb on their chest or under their car. It is there own choose to do this they train for it they believe in it it is because of themselves that they hate us.

I don't really care. I believe in this country and can think of no where else I would rather live. And evidently, judging by the amount of immigrants we get, so does a lot of other people from around the world. Many of which risk life and limb just to get here.
