or...Why is the ocean a different color than the Atlantic Ocean?

I've heard it is the sky reflecting off the water, but the water is not the same color as the sky. The sky is a deep sky blue color and the ocean is a deep greenish-blue.

The color and depth of the sea floor. The Caribbean is very shallow compared to the Atlantic ocean, and it has very white or light-colored sand, which reflects the sunlight back up better. The combination makes the water a distinct blue color. You see the same thing in other shallow waters, like off the Great Barrier Reef by Australia.

A blue sky makes for a blue ocean because the color is mostly a reflection (as long as the water is clean and not colored by algea or silt).
