viruses are just small programs and nearly all viruses are written to exploit holes in the Windows OS. there aren't too many made for the Mac and it's not as easy to find an exploit In OS X. Since Apple controls both the software and the hardware that goes into a Mac, it makes it easier to secure the system from external attacks and viruses.

Macs are not big targets for virus writers, simply because so few people use Macs, it is not worth their time. However, if Macs ever become popular...watch out!
