Yep. Get an initial assesment of your fill water to start. Take it into to your local pro and explain that it's new water and the pool volume and type. Don't forget to tell him, what sanitizer system you will be using. (chlorine pucks, bromine, silver oxide, salt water generator or ozone). He'll be able to set you up with what you initially need to have the water balanced. You don't give any info in this regard, so I can't be more specific in what he will give you.
While you're in the shop, if your builder didn't give you one, purchase a 3 way test kit. I prefer the ones made by Aquality or by Taylor. Both are good kits and reliable, when stored correctly.
You will need, on a weekly basis, to test for at least 3 things. Total Alkalinity (TA), Ph and Cl (chlorine or other sanitizer level)
Adjust their parameters in order of importance. TA is the most important, it get's brought into range first, Ph second and Cl third. Sounds strange, but that's how you need to do it to have clear water. People who don't do it this way, are the ones you hear about with issues. Nothing you will ever add to a pool, will work, unless that TA is bang on. That means nothing, chlorine, shock, algacides, clarifiers, the works. Nothing.
The levels for a typical pool : TA 80-120 Ph 7.2 - 7.6 Cl 1.5 - 3.0
If the TA is in there, Ph tends to follow by itself, requiring little or no chemical to adjust. Your santizer will now work for you, cheaper and more effectively.
Ohh yeah, while you're in the pool store, ask one of the Lab Rats or the owner for a pool care tip brouchure. Most chemical manufaturers distribute them with their products and usually the store staff forget they have them.
