It took less than 3 hours from when it started to when I tested positive for blood in my urine. The nurse said it was severe. Besides cranberry juice, are there any suggestions to help with the pain?

AZO is an over the counter medication that can help with the pain, but it can only be used for up to two days. Drink plenty of fluids including cranberry juice. Avoid soda, coffee, alcohol- anything containing citrus juices or caffeine until the infection has cleared. Avoid any type of feminine products like sprays as they may irritate your urethra. If you are sexually active urinate after every encounter, and make sure you wipe from front to back. Also cleanse the area before sex.

Actually, there is a prescription medicine you can ask your doctor for - pyridium (I think that's how you spell it - you say it like "per - i - de - um) - which actually helps to numb your urethra (the outflow track for your urine, from the bladder). Its a very safe drug, and you can take it with your antibiotic, until your antibiotic acutally gets rid of the infection (usually about 3 days). Watch out - it can turn your urine orange or red, but that's normal. As the nurse said above. . . for prevention, be sure to wipe from front to back after using the bathroom, and to pee after sex. If you get urinary tract infections over and over, you may need further tests. Hope this helps.
