Depends upon what you're using it for. Large purse would need to be VERY large, to carry school books and other supplies. Also, not convenient or comfortable, as a purse is carried on ONE side of your body - hurts, requires shifting from side to side, so looks, ultimately, ungainly and uncomfortable. A backpack is more utilitarian and practical, for school, books, supplies etc. The weight is evenly dispersed across the broader area of your upper body, so it's more comfortable and convenient, and does not detract from your appearance, since it's BEHIND you. HOWEVER, if you are toting around a significant amount of weight, I'd strongly suggest a rolling backpack, Yup, the best of all worlds: a carry-all, on wheels! walmart has really cute ones, for 18 or so dollars. Choose wisely...don't compromise your future posture / health...many larger containers come with small makeup cases, etc, which zip or clip in and out. Be well.

I like a backpack better for carrying heavy books and things for class. It spreads out the weight better. It's cool to look cute with a large purse but can get highly uncomfortable. And they make very cute backpacks now anyways! The key is fashion and function baby!

I always use my backpack as a combo pack and purse. My stuff goes in the big pocket and the smaller outer pocket holds my purse-like stuff. That way I always have my hands free and I don't have to stress about swapping bags around even if I'm going to hop on my bike.
