Go to the Melissa Cross website and order her DVD, "The Zen of Screaming." I ordered it for my kid, who's in a metal band, and it's great -- she teaches you proper vocal techniques so that you can scream without wrecking your voice. She's worked with Slipknot and a bunch of other bands and she really knows her stuff.

Years of practice plus they have to have the right vocal chords for it in the first place. Not every metal singer can last, I mean the original Killswitch singer quit due to his throat ******* up. He was pretty fcuking sweet too.

I have tried as well with not a lot of success....

But I know they have deep voices, which obviously helps. And they also go through LOTS of water bottles.

Doing it often will help a lot. I noticed after a while that I could stand it longer each time.

So if you are trying to learn how to do that, I would suggest small baby steps when you are alone (so you don't piss off your family!) and just keep trying at it :)

Years of practice. I love Mastodon and Bury Your Dead. I want to know how the chicks do it, like Arch Enemy or Kittie. I can growl and scream but I don't think I could for a whole show or tour without passing out or coughing up blood. ???

I'm not sure exactly cause I can't do it either, but I read somewhere that there's several singing teachers that specialize in teaching how to scream like that. It takes alot of practice so that it doesn't hurt and so you won't lose your voice after several songs.

Two packs of Marlboros a day--that's how Brian Johnson of AC/DC keeps his raspiness. If I don't push my voice hard enough when I speak, I get a very raspy sound out of it. Actually worked well when I helped my friend do voices for his final in animation class.

Catch it in the very top of your throat. Let it scrap out of the top of your mouth. And Rock It.
