Alright, I understand free agency. I understand contracts. What I don't understand is the term 'Franchise Tag'.
What does this term mean, and what benifits does a team or player recieve from having this placed on them?

If a team has a restricted free agent they can put the franchise tag on him. This means they pay him the average of the top 5 salaries of the best in his position. Teams normally do it when they want to keep a guy around without a long term commitment. At the end of the year they can franchise them again or let them go into free agency.

a restricted free agent who is tagged as the franchise player cannot sign with any other team. he receives a one-year deal for the average of the top-5 paid players at his position. if he is franchised in consecutive years, the salary goes up by 20%. only one player may be tagged per team, but he can be tagged for as many consecutive years as they want. in the case of shaun alexander last year, he accepted the franchise tag in exchange for a clause stating that the seahawks would not franchise him again this year. that gave him the security of knowign that he would be an un-restricted free agent no matter what after last season.

It means that the player is "tagged" as the "it" player for the team. They usually give it to the top veteran who has played his dues and has proven he deserves good playing time and money. The player gets the average of the top 5 salaries for his position and the team gets to keep a great, productive player.

The benefit for the team is that no one else can get the player. The benefit for the player is that he gets the average salary of the top 5 paid players at his position.
