Well it depends, different satellites will have different orbit heights base on how they need to be used. Sun-synchronous satellites orbit at approximately 525-530 miles and orbit about ever 100 minutes. They collect environmental data and can collect complete global data a couple times a day. Then there are geo-synchronous satellites that orbit from between 22,000 to 22,500 miles, and are used from co-operative efforts like with EUMETSAT, or for national needs of the country running them (like India)

Spy satellites with optical instrument packages are usually the closest to orbit the Earth, but specifics are secret. Google "Keyhole spy satellite." It is speculated that some Spysats use stealth technology and orbit in he 80-100 mi extreme low earth orbit range. There are many difficulties at that altitude including rapid decay of orbit secondary to atmospheric friction.

Some in low earth orbit (200 to 1200 Km).
Some higher.
Some in Geostationary orbit 35,786 Km above the equator.
Some are in orbit around planets millions of miles away.
Voyager is 9.3 Billion of miles away in deep space and on it's way to another star.

there r many satellite orbits and all hav diff routes.. since a satellite need a certain escape speed to escape earth's gravitation field as long as it reaches that speed it can stay up there, as for orbits there r many of them.. if all were to b on the same height wun they tend to crash???

depends......
geostationary satellites are 36000 km above earth.
polar satellites are lower than that.
and highly elliptical orbit satellites hover quite close to the surface.

They vary in height from about 150 mi to 22500 mi for a geostationary sat.
None of them 'hover'
