First of all, don't substitute reading the book with sparknotes or cliffnotes. Find a synopsis of the book, read it to understand the general plot. Then READ the book.

If you get to spots that are too complicated or confusing, skim them.

Then look for an online forum that discusses the book and start reading the posts there and then post your questions about what you didn't understand.

Once you feel like you understand most of the book, THEN go read sparknotes or cliff notes. This will help you pick up the nuances of things you didn't get.

I'm old and still enjoy picking up classic books about stuff I missed in high school or college. When I am done with the book I will pick up the cliff notes at the bookstore and skim that to see what I missed because it still interests me.

You will cheat yourself if you read sparknotes or cliffnotes. This is the equivalent at best of listening to a CD as opposed to enjoying a live concert. Try to read a chapter or whatever manageable number of pages you can handle. Reward yourself when you've met your goal. I also suggest you investigate whatever real life events this historical novel corresponds to. You could easily do this via the internet. Perhaps it might spark your interest and help you enjoy your book and even want to read more.
