My thoughts are......
I dont believe it is that hard for ugly qualified woman to find employment.
I also think......
If your friends are contemplating plastic surgery, then it may not be to remain viable in the job market. They are going to retire soon if they are 50. Why go that long with the same face and decide to spend $10,000 on a new face to use for 10-12 yrs? Thats not very efficient. Their is no garuntee that it will yield the results desired and then what? A boob job? A PhD in nuclear physics goes alot further than a set of D cups or pouty lips.
Personal appearance has a lot to do with confidence and self esteem. If you have a poor personal appearnce ot the point where it is affecting your ability to obtain employment, then thier are issues that need to be addressed that cosmetic processes will not help. Man or woman you are representing the company you are working for. I know alot of ugly employed people. The ycarry themselves because they think they are beautiful. since they think this on the inside, they are confident and it exudes to the outside.
Why not go back to school rather than get surgery? You have to supplement what you have and aquire what you dont. If you are ugly, you may have to be smarter that most women; however, you are more respected, and less likely to be sexually harrased. More than likely the pretty woman will be discriminated against because of her beauty. How many times have you seen or heard of someone saying "She got her job because of looks."? Ask those "pretty" women how it feels. Not so good im sure.

Yes women are judged by their appearance in addition. It is easier for an older less attractive man to get the job because if the woman is not attractive they are not as valuable/pleasing to the eye. Tell them to get the surgery. This is the way of the world, sign of the times. All the talking about how unfair it is won't change the facts. I am 35 and I never eat anything that is cheat food. I am strictly veg, fruit, salad, meat in its plainest form. Pretty much no carbs. Drink about 4-5 liters of water a day. I work out so hard it hurts me to sit down. You know why? It is so I can move up. So you may say, no pain, no gain. Pass that on to your friends.

Because this is still a man's would, despite all the efforts.Men like eye candy whereas women are not as superficial.Though most are learning to comply with nearly every desire a man has.I am well aware of my powers and am one that is not afraid to use them.As for the women(over50) who are contemplating plastic surgery to remain visible in the job market. It may work for a brief moment, because soon there age will show,or they will begin to look like melted candles,(a result of too much plastic surgery).Besides cosmetic surgery is not permanent, they will have to forever get it redone and that can be very expensive.I personally think its not worth the money.

Yes. I don't know about anywhere else, but where I work women are judged by their appearance. When women come in for interviews we always gossip and pick apart their appearance after they've left. If their qualifications are good their appearance doesn't matter to us. We do it because we're bored and we're insecure. By picking apart others it puts them down to our level. We do it to men too.

There actually is research to support the statement that more attractive women are more employable regerdless of ability. It is true in my experience as well. Getting surgery is a bit drastic. I don't think it has gotten to that point. It is acceptable for a man to be over weight and down right ugly at a certain age. Women are never forgiven for it. What will we do?

Absolutely, but so are the guys. I've worked with some underqualified men who got their jobs because they were handsome and charming.
As for the older women/men, I don't know how much of that is because the women are losing their charms due to age or because some folks still think a woman can't be a leader. Could be a little of both.

Actually, scientific studies show that regardless of gender, people are judged by their looks. Even animals choose attractive over "plain looking" within their specie. Animal instinct makes us be biased and distorts our perception of others and their abilities.
As for your friends, there are nonsurgical ways to look your best. Appearance can be greatly improved by following expert advice on how to dress, hair style, makeup, etiquette, speech, and the like. Getting plenty of rest helps as well as keeping healthy habits specially a healthy diet.

Do i think women are judged by their appearance? Yes, very much so. As much as women have evolved in society, men are still men, and their way of thought hasn't changed. I've worked very hard on my experience to get where i am, but i've also had to maintain a good appearance physically. It's all part of the competition...

Yes, it happens. Occassionally happens to men, even. But it also happens for other reasons, too: race, sexual orientation, religious and even political affiliation, just to name a few.
