Maybe the snowballs were in his mind too. Some sort of representation of the nasty little things life keeps throwing at him.

Calvin and Hobbs is a comic strip, and the characters can do anything, it all depends on the cartoonists imagination and he gave Calvin a large portion of imagination too.
