I hate how I'm supposed to 'look busy' when I have nothing else to do all day, hence the reason I look at Yahoo! Answers several times a day (lol). If you've ever had a job like this, how did you cope? What did you do? And why did you decide to stay with the job??? (I'm staying bc they pay me really really well for the amount of experience I have).

Same here!! And of course the one time i have a game or movie pop up here comes the boss. Go figure! There is no work and the work they give me I am done in seconds. I am thinking about asking for my own office so i don't have to look around my shoulder every 2 secons! its ridiculous! Those days that you have to look busy are exhausting and the days i work hard are nice and I leave energized!

I had one over the summer, interning in the legal department of a mortgage banker, because I worked so fast I would constantly have to invent things to do. I passed the time re-organizing old information, making spreadhseets and dressing up older spreadsheets. To keep sane I took a lot of breaks and printed out huge documents that I'd spend hours researching. Lucky mine was just for the summer, hope this helps.

I had a job like that while I was in college. I hated the job and eventually got fired (unrelated to my ability to look busy). But I busied myself with moving things off self and dusting. This job was made difficult by the fact that we all had stations we had to stay in. It was horrible. I only took it because it was near my school.

My last job was like that.......8.5hrs some days of sheer boredom as a hostess in a slot machine joint. Spent all day walking around asking customers if they need yet ANOTHER drink.... or I would walk around with a wet cloth and wipe something. I know exactly what you mean... it's very hard isn't it. Maybe you should look somewhere else for something you would enjoy more? Good luck if you do. :)

I hear you there!!! Even if my work is done, I need to stay "busy" or my boss will feel like he needs to find some semi-useless project for me to work on. I stretch out my existing work as long as I can, talk on Yahoo messenger, mess around on MySpace, answer questions on here, play solitaire.... anything to keep from actually clearing my desk off....

I have never had a job that did NOT tell me to look busy at some time or another, I think all "supervisors" or "managers" say it :)

Oh you lucky girl, you get to use yahoo while bored out of your mind? We had to hide our crosswords and doodling while standing at a podium doing, well nothing.

Take a study course (related to your job?) and get something out of your time there.
