Earth's second highest mountain, after Mount Everest, is K2, also known as Mount Godwin Austen and as Dapsang. The peak is 28,238 feet (8,607 meters) high, and it is in the Karakoram Range of northern Jammu and Kashmir, near the border of Pakistan and China. It was given the name K2 because it was the second peak measured in this range.

The acutal highest mountain measured from base to peak is the island of Hawaii. The tallest (Measured from sea level) is Everest and the second is K-2.
I'm not sure but I think I read that a resurvey of Everest and K-2 made K-2 a little taller. But don't quote me on this. I could not find a source but I do remember hearing this.
