My brother is 19 years old, he does not know his number. I have tried going to the social security office, but they wouldn't help me (if i'm not a parent I can't ask for a copy of his card). I have asked everywhere and it's a just a huge catch 22; if I don't have one document I can't get the other, and I can't obtain the other if I don't have the first document. I would like to know if someone has ever experienced this and if they could please let me know what they did. At the moment he has no forms of identification, no id, no birth certificate, no school id, nothing. I tried to get his transcripts but the school could not find them. I am out of ideas. Anything anyone can tell me would be great.
p.s- As far as our parents, we lost contact with them 3 years ago and do not know where they are.

Has your brother ever had any finger, thumb, or foot prints recorded on any type of documents? If he has ever had a learners permit, drivers license, or state photo Identification card issued to him, then he has his prints on file with that state agency. All you need to do is take him into the Office & apply for a new one (ID) & that agency (Dept of motor vehicles lisc bureau) will verify his identity by comparing his new prints with his old prints that are already in their files. His Birth Certificate will have the name of the Hospital & they should have his footprints in the medical files. These can be used to compare with his feet today & prove his identity. Any one can get a copy of a birth certificate. You need to know the city & state & YOU need to have a valid photo ID to purchase a copy from the courthouse/records dept.

The school could not find them? That sounds like a load of horse manure. If he went there, they have the records somewhere. Make them look.

For a birth certificate, he can simply call the town where he was born and request a copy.

How does a person get to be 19 and not have any identification? Shouldn't he have a drivers license or a non-drivers id? How does he get into clubs or anywhere that is 18-over?

You cannot retrieve someones ss number. ONLY that person legally is allowed to obtain it.

I would also suggest trying to contact your parents for this information.

PS: The whole thing sounds fishy.

Why are you running up and down for a nineteen year old? He is old enough to go and state his case at the Social Security office himself.

Not that I don't sympathize with you, for you are evidently a caring sister. However, they'll only answer him personally, as I've seen from personal experience.

Start from the hospital he was (likely) born at to see if you can get any birth records. Don't know this? You could try your own birth records- chances are you were born in the same hospital.Do you have any baptismal records? This would definitely help in pinning down a birth date. Do you know where you lived when he was born?

In all,he has to be more proactive about sorting out his documentation. Attempt to track down your parents(easier said than done, right?),because they hold the keys to his problem.
I will definitely keep my eyes open on this case.

Now, it may seem a long shot, but if you live in the NY tristate area, you might try to talk with the WB11 station and ask the Help Me,Howard program staff for help. And the risk of sounding cheeky, have you tried Oprah? She has a way of getting things done, that woman!

I wish you success! Down with terrorism, and down with the jerks who got this country so nervous that you find yourself having to prove you are who you say you are even in a supermarket. May Osama's children's children suffer !

When one is over the age of 18 in the united states one must obtain all their own forms of ID and legal and health info for themselves.

Unless one is representing an individual who is incapacitate in some way.

Therefore, I must wonder what is your true intention here of obtaining advice on gaining documentation.
Most people here would be able to tell you how. but then how do we know your motive is legal? I will not be giving this advice. Sounds off to me.

There are ways to get this information. However, I'm not going to list it on an open site like this. If you can prove to me that you are who you say you are and that this is a legitimate request then I can find the info for you. If you want you can email me or IM me.

Why doesn't your brother take care of his business? It's a security thing - you're not allowed to access this information unless you have been declared his legal guardian by the courts.
