The heath hen, a subspecies of the prairie chicken, became extinct owing largely to hunting and loss of habitat. There were fewer than 100 heath hens left in the United States by 1907. A sanctuary was made for them on Martha's Vineyard, a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. By 1916 they had successfully grown to over 800 birds. Other sources state that they have grown to 2000. Unfortunately a fired destroyed part of their breeding ground that year. This was followed by a number of other events, harsh winters, an influx of goshawks, a predatory bird that fed on the heath hens, and a poultry disease among domestic chickens and brought to the island by domestic turkeys. By 1927 there were only 13 left of which were mostly males and the last one to be seen died ion March 11, 1932.
