I disagree. Isreal did the United States a big favor by dealing a major blow to Syria and Iran. We don't know what would have happened if Isreal would have settled for appeasment but I know that Hezzbollah has been stockpiling military supplies and personnel they've been receiving from Iran through Beirut. My guess was it was only a matter of time before Hezzbollah would launch a well organzied assault on Isreal with Syria and Iran. The United States would then have to get involved in defending Isreal against a much more formadble enemy that might have nuclear weapons. This would cost the United States far more money and lives then rebuilding Lebanon. In case the fighting in the middle east is costing the United States tons of moneys everyday in inflated oil prices and military campaigns. I see the rebuilding of Lebanon as a pro western demcracy a nesscary investment and not a cost.

We are paying for it now and have for years. Our Government screams about the money Muslims get to fight in their own country when we are the financial backers of Israel.
Now, will our country men continue the excuse of 9/11, WMds, evil dictators to continue our incursion into Sovereign Nations? We have created everyone of the new anti US fighters. I can't call them terrorists any more.
The true terrorists of 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia, with whom we are on friendly terms. The next wave of terrorists came when we stayed in Iraq ,and the religious factions are gong to fight even if we withdraw. The London terrorists are from Pakistan. Not Iraq, Iran, Syria , or Lebanon. So why are we not fighting in Pakistan?
Because we don't care, the oil and big bucks are not there.
As for as Bush wanting a permanent military presence . Ha, the American people and world pressure must keep him from escalating this tragedy he and his Administration have brought to bear.

There is no real winner per say.
Israel, despite all their PR propaganda, managed to gain more recognition as being a terrorist country. Israel's campaign to get the Lebanese people to go against Hezbollah backfired and turned Hezbollah into heroes in the eyes of many of the Arab / Muslim citizens for standing up to the Israeli continued aggression.
The US, UK (governments) and the UN managed to increase the lose to their credibility on the international front.
Lebanon lost many innocent lives, their infrastructure and their economy.
The only outcome is that Hezbollah gave hope and zeal to other freedom fighters in the occupied neighboring countries.

No winners just a time-out. Hezbollah will use this time to restock their weapons and Israel will wait for the first rock to be thrown at an Israeli soldier leaving Lebanon..

Does anyone really win a war? Especially the US. You are right. We always get the bill, and most of the refugees.
