46 and the 4 commonwealth's are PA, KY, MA and VA(so 50 'states', 52 are some card decks and full weeks in a year)
Israel, England, Canada, Mexico, and Afganistan/Iraq don't count.
BUT I was all for making Iraq a state as it would solve the instability we caused AND provide a huge oil source without messing up our waters/lands. Less expensive short term not making them a state I guess. But now that they pay the same price for gasoline as we do...

There are 50 states and the protectorates of puerto rico and guam and the virgin islands and samoa. The protectorates enjoy our protection and laws and vote for there local officials but do not have senators or representatives that can vote in congress all they can do is lobby for laws they want they also can't vote for president. They don't pay US taxes but get US aid and lease fees for bases and such.
