I hate Windows messenger and don't want it on my local machine. Periodically it reinstalls itself. How do I remove it from my machine forever?

Not a problem. Download and install Xpy. Xpy is a security software program which patches vulnerabilities found on Windows operating system. One of its feature is to permanently remove Windows Messanger. The download link is: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4218.html

There are other features besides removing Windows Messenger. You might be interested in browsing through the program.

Xpy does not need to be installed just click the xpy.exe and scroll down to Windows Messenger > check off uninstall Windows Messenger > click [Apply].

You could remove Windows Messenger from the registry. It would work fine, until you start Windows Messenger. If you start Windows Messenger again, it would try and add it to the registry and hence start every time the comp starts.
You could try http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm
I have used the tool successfully and I'm without Windows Messenger since 3 years now. But remember never to start Windows Messenger again.
