The car should be on a flat level surface. The engine should be warmed up (hot). You want to check the fluid when the car is in park, or neutral, and running.. I recommend park, for safety. NEVER stand in front of a car that is running and in gear, unless you want to take the chance of serious injury or death!

Idle engine warm level ground wipe the trans stick put it all the way back in pull out fluid should be between the marks low mark cold transmission top mark is hot transmission. Wipe the dipstick with clean white paper towel and see how much gray color is on the stick with red fluid black fluid and lots of gray means you have waited to long to change the fluid. Change the transmission and fluid every thirty thousand miles for best results.

If the engine is cold, drive the car about 15 to 30 mins. Then put car in park, turn off engine, wait about 10 -15 mins, then check tranny fluid level. You should always do this when checking your engine oil too for the best reading. Good Luck!! =)

Most Automatic transmissions are checked with the transmission fluid hot and the car in park. If I start it up and just let it idle I put my foot on the brake then put the car in reverse then into drive and then into park. Thomas S.
