I was driving my Honda recently and the engine stopped while idling. As the bike is old, I checked the sparkplugs and one was covered in oil. I changed both plugs and started the bike again. It performed better then it ever has before, but after only a couple minutes, it stopped once again, this time kicking while I was in 2nd gear and refusing to rev when I gave it gas. It seems to be the same problem. I walked it home and adjusted the idle level, and no problems there. The bike seems to be putting out a lot of smoke, which seems to me to mean that it’s burning oil? My cousin suggested that I change the air filter because it was running too rich, but would that cause it to stall out like that? Also, I have noticed that there is oil coming out of the exhaust. Dripping mostly, not much at all, but I wonder if they are related? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like your 33 year-old motorcycle is finally ready for a top-end rebuild... New piston rings and a valve job. It'll cost you a few bucks to have the work done, but your bike will run better than ever when it's done. Hopefully they won't find anything else major wrong with the engine when they pull the cylinders off.

I agree - it's a top end problem. If you're ambitious, pretty competent, and have some tools, you can do most of the work yourself and save quite a bit of money.
