Dell's are very cheap and well built, but if something breaks, good luck because you have to order parts specifically from dell. Also, their customer service center in India is VERY hard to associate with when you need real help. HP on the other hand may cost a bit more, but rarely need repair other than the occasional power supply or other wear & tear repairs.

Go for HP. I have a Dell laptop and it sucks. The battery won't charge and the overall quality is low. HP is better. It's true the more you pay the better quality you get.

I can't say that it's the best, but we just got a great deal at the Dell Outlet online. I paid $369 for a dimension 5150 with DVD-Rom and DVD-burner. It was a "scratch and dent" model with a small, barely noticeable scratch on top.

I prefer mac. There are virtually no viruses for them, they are VERY user friendly and they are compatible with just about everything! I have been a proud mac owner for 4 years and I would NEVER get a pc again. just my 2 cents :-)
