I agree with you completely. Religion and power...or power in the guise of religious zealots.
All of the world's major and most devastating wars throughout history were caused by religious differences (or "religion" was/is used as an excuse to wage war). But let's not stop at war. There is the very real issue of genocide, or 'ethnic cleansing'. Add a few million deaths to the deaths caused by "legitimate" war.
Aside from pathological mortality, humans are the major cause of death to date (IMHO). Who knows, maybe in ten years humans will be THE major cause of human deaths...period.
On the other hand, as countries sit idly by and watch the tragedy of AIDS continue to take hundreds of thousands of lives each year in 3rd World Countries, such as the sub-Saharan countries, it may grow to be the largest consumer of human life second only to lack of food and clean drinking water.
Best Wishes!

The latest figures I could find from the World Health Organisation provide the following league table:-
CAUSE
(1) Heart Disease
(2) Malignant Neoplasms
(3) Cerebrovascular Disease
(4) Accidents & Adverse Effects
(5) Pneumonia
(6) Atherosclerosis
(7) Mental Disorders
(8) Senility Without Psychosis
(9) Diabetes Mellitus
(10) Embolism & Thrombosis
I don't think religion or power are involved in many of these.

for males between the ages of 15 and 25 years of age accidents is the #1 killer, disease wise heart attacks are the number one killer of adults, with the fastest growing rate being among post menopausal women. Religion, naw, been fighting over that for time eternal. What was Henry's right idea? Change churches every time he wanted to change wives ( unless he had them killed).
Any way hope that helps.

I would have to agree. For example the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. Religion often forbids contraception so more and more are born with the disease and of course it is passed on to so many. Religion is the root of all evil.

Well, heart problems are major causes of death in developped countries but not elsewhere. Starvation is a big cause of death in developping countries but not in western countries...
Sad to say but I think that birth is the biggest cause of death... When you think of it, everyone that come to life dies so if you don't, you won't die..
Oh, beloved logics

I don't think religion is the highest cause of death... its lifestyle - heart disease is the main cause of death in many countries because of too much fat and too little exercise.

Well.........2 billion will die of cancer, 2 billion of cardiovascular disease, and 2 billion of various other maladies, including old age.
War comes very far down the list, and certainly not ahead of the motor car.
