A 6" scope is the most you can get (new) under $300., For a little more money (about $324-$360) you could buy an 8" which will show quite a bit more. But go for the 6" if that is all you can possibly hope to afford.
Most 6" dobsonians go for about $250
Stay away from ebay, unless you really know what you are doing and have thoroughly researched about the make and model of instrument being offered.

You could either repair a broken one or build one from scratch. The only peice that you couldnt replace would be the main mirror. You can use round tubing at home depot for the main body, and go to a hobby shop for the second mirror that reflects the stuff into the eyepiece. I built one earlier this year its not that hard.

you can build your own using magnifying glasses, an empty paper towel carboard roll, duck tape and a rubber band. google macgyver + telescope.
