Insecurities, not wanting to be even mentined or related to the "illegal hyspanics" coming over. They want to belong and be Americans, not hypanics. They are the same people who don't want to speak (spanish in public) or learn spanish.

Perhaps they are offended by the fake accent used to pronouce a name - trying to sound Spanish doesn't make you pronouce it correctly - It is one thing to correctly pronounce Rodrigues and another to say it like you were Antonio Banderras or Ricardo Mantalban. Who knows - in this day and age people get their huff up for nearly no reason at all.

However, I have noticed that many words from other languages that are used by Americans have completely lost their original sounds - especially the word was French - Pierre is not pronounced Pee -err but peer - in my book the American version is wrong wrong wrong - but when I made the mistae of pronouncing the French word in Pierre I was quickly corrected and told the correct way is the wrong way and that's the way it is...

I feel no offense with pronunciation when it comes to my last name (Figueroa).

I do not see why a person would really expect for everyone to pronounce a last name correctly.

I actually appreciate the attempt rather than just saying "how do you say that"

Asi que no se ofendan si alguien no puede pronunciar su apellido, porque lo mas seguro es que uno mismo mal pronuncia otros appellidos no allegados a nuestro idoma.

My real name isnt pronounced the way some people think it is, and it does bother me when people pronounce it wrong. It bothers me more, though, when I correct them, and they continue pronouncing it wrong. I think thats very inconsiderate.

I guess, if you offend someone, apologise immediately, and ask politely how it is pronounced, for future reference.

I have never encountered a person who got offended for having their name pronounced correctly.

I wasn't aware that they do. But it sounds funny. It sounds a little pretentious.

Did you ever watch Everyday Italian? Giada will be talking about eggs, mixing, blah blah blah, then all of a sudden it's prosciutto this and biscotti that, all pronounced in perfect Italian.
