The fake (faux?) leather they make today is so resemblant to genuine leather. Is there a trick to check if the leather is genuine or not?

genuine leather is real soft and has a leather smell,,, you can almost roll a jacket up in a ball, it's so smooth and soft. fake is stiff, not a good smell and will soon crack if the fake leather is worn alot.

The smell definitely, find some genuine leather and sniff it. You'll then be able to tell which leather has the very unique leather smell! good luck in finding some...
