There are groups in every major city in US. People in these groups often set up training and education venues, and also offer guidance and mentoring depending on which end of the whip you want to be on. Also there is often a number of regularly schedule meet and greets called "Muches" that meet over meal in a non-threatening public venue (think restaurant).
In my local area (Detroit) there are several (10+) Munch groups of different ages and preferences, several groups that focus on education and many more people who are willing to teach.
Personally I do not recommend much reading on the internet because this is mostly fiction or unsafe practice methods. Get real input from the people who have done it in real life already. If you don't head this warning, and play with and hurt someone or yourself, people in your local community will pass the word that you are an unsafe player and then you will have a hard time finding local people to play with.
I re-recommend good education because knowing; how hard you can hit where and with what toy, or how long you can leave a limb bound in a certain position, or what type and how much humiliation you can use on someone, knowing these limits are good things.
If you need further assistance I can be reached via e-mail by this ID at yahoo.

As another answerer said, getting involved in a "munch" group is a good way to become familiar with the actual practice of BDSM. You can usually locate a nearby group (assuming that you don't live in the middle of nowhere) by doing a web search for munches in a nearby sizable city. There will often be a contact person that can be reached via e-mail.
However, if you are looking for basic information on BDSM, Wikipedia is a good place to start for factual information. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BDSM.) The article has a number of references for literature that lead to mostly realistic descriptions of the (BDSM) lifestyle community. Booksellers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Border's should have copies. Greenery Press (http://www.greenerypress.com/) has a number of good titles.
If you are starting out, I recommend going through Wikipedia and the linked articles. If you like what you see, get a general BDSM book and peruse through that. If still interested, then contact a munch group, and they can help you from there.
I wish you well with your search.

You seem to be asking two different questions: How to learn more about the lifestyle; and how to stave off infidelity. Is there a particular reason that your boyfriend doesn't have the resources/interest to introduce you properly to the community? It seems that if you're both willing and he's able, it would even be a way to bond you closer together. On the other hand, if you're not interested in it, and/or he is making you feel guilty or 'bad' for not knowing as much as he does, that's more a problem with your relationship than it is with your lack of experience with ball gags. I hope it is the latter - bondage play can be fun!
