Today, the fastest car is the Bugatti Veyron, with 1001 hp and can go up to 250 mph. Bugatti is planning on bringing out a convertible and even faster version. Another extremely fast car is the Koenigsegg CCX, which has 800+ hp. And according to the show Top Gear, if you put biofuel in it, it will get 900+ hp, It can get above 242 mph.

Depends on your definition of "car." If that definition basically involves something with wheels that travels along the ground, the world record is held by The Blue Flame (669 MPH), but that was basically a rocket with wheels. If the definition includes top-fuel vehicles, then no -- top-fuel dragsters and funny cars top out well over 300 MPH. If you're looking strictly at internal-combustion engine vehicles that run on gasoline, the McLaren F1 is up there, but I don't know how it compares to the Porsche 959. They haven't publicized the top speed of the 959, but rumors put it somewhere north of 240 MPH.

Thrust SSC is the fastest car in the world. It cracked Mach 1 more than 760 mph. It is now in Coventry Transport Museum and you can ride on a simulator (using the original film and data recordings) for free.

Actually the fastest land vehicle(driven by a jet fighter pilot) is the one made in britain that broke the sound barrier, first time in history.
The fastest normal is the Bugatti V12 twin turbo.
