The EU has no army. The US was going to close many of the bases and relocate them and both Germany and France cried about the economic devestation it would cause.

The bases are part of NATO and have nothing to do with the EU. Europeans generally pride themselves on the misguided believe that they are well educated; why are you flaunting your ignorance?

American bases have allowed Eurpean countries to have smaller and less effective armies than if they were left to fend for themselves. Not to mention all the trouble you would have had learning German... and then Russian and the Cryllic alphabet since you would have been annexed to the USSR shortly after the Russians defeated Germany.

Hey Johnny Canuck... what is the Canadian fascination with changing history to suit your anti-American biases.

The US entered WWI in March of 1915, it officially began August 1914... the war lasted 4 years and we entered after Germany attacked a ship in US waters, and overt act of war. But that was 7 months into the 4 years war. Not "the end of it".

BTW: Canada first sent troops in January of 1915, just two months prior to the US.

There were approx 56,000 Canadian fatalities and approx 116,000 US fatalities in WWI. Canadian fatalities are often included in British figures so the numbers may be low, but not by 50%.

The allied troops were not involved in the eastern front, NAZI Germany's biggest mistake was opening the third front of the war because they mistakenly thought the Japanese would divide the Russian Army.

I'm sure you have history books in Canada you can read this for yourself, and don;t need some arrogant American to tell it to you. Now apologize to Angel because you were wrong.

And the EU will never become a superpower... there is too much infighting among the different countries. The larger they grow the larger the discontent will be.

And finally, to answer the posted question... The EU is not a country, the member states don't even like each other. If the US and NATO bases were withdrawn from Europe you'd all be speaking Chinese before the end of the year.

If the US keeps going on the course it's going where it gets involved in expensive foriegn wars it doesn't really need to fight (Still, thanks for getting rid of Saddam. Good luck with the mess he left behind though) keeps outsourcing it economy and being a net importer of damn near everything you'll have EU bases in North America soon enough. Maybe it will be when Canada moves back to a European orbit. Maybe it'll be when the EU finally eclipses the US as the Great Super Power. Who knows, but I'm more than willing to bet it's coming whether Americans like it or not.

PS: Message to Angel. Learn some history. In World War One there were more combatants and casualties in Canadian uniforms than there ever was in American. The British and French nations and their empires won that war. The US just came in at the end just so they didn't look bad as world power. When it comes to World War Two, yeah the US saved WESTERN Europe and did their part to rid the world of the Nazis but never ever forget the real confrontation of the European war was fought on the way to Stalingrad.

No, this is a one-way process. Only we have the right to build bases in other people's countries. That's the path to true world domination.

Seriously, most bases were established out of the consequences of war - where troops were sent to support a foreign government; or where the country was annexed to the power setting up the bases.

Since that hasn't (and most likely won't) apply in the US, we will not have any foreign bases in America.

Noteably, Bush said in the 2000 election debates that if he was elected, he would close all our overseas bases and bring our troops home. I guess that didn't sit well with his masters Cheney and Rumsfeld

Why would we do that? We had bases over there to protect them, from Russia. We won the war with Germany, that was a part of the end of the war agreement.

We already understand socialism, it doesn't work. It only sounds good it has no merit. It has never worked in the past. The Pilgrims tried it and it just made people Lazy. errr! No Reason to get ahead!

How would a military base show socialism as the "best form of government ever". The military is 100% government owned & run in the US too.

How about some on our southern border with Mexico.

The purpose of the bases in Europe was to act as a deterent to the Soviet Union. That threat is largely over.

Now it is to provide forward support for troops in action in the Middle East.

I think that they should come home, at least those in France and Germany. They think that they can do it for themselves.

WE DON'T NEED ANY EUROPEAN COUNTRIES BASES ON AMERICAN SOIL. WE ARE ON THEIR SOIL BECAUSE WE BAILED OUT THE EUROPEANS FROM TWO WORLD WARS. KEEP YOUR SOLDIERS ON YOUR LAND. WE WERE INVITED TO PUT BASES ON YOUR LAND. WE DON'T WANT EUROPEAN SOLDIERS HERE. WE DON'T NEED HELP FOR WE ARE THE STRONGEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
AMERICA RULES.
