To get the most bang for your buck, figure out how much computer you need and compare prices at different manufacturers/sellers. You can get different computer specs. at http://www.comprec.com

build your own, for around $350 i recently built a system with 1gig ram, an amd 64 3500 processor, an ecs rs482-m mothrboard, a 160gig SATA hard drive, and the integrated equivalent of an ati x300. you cant even get a system from dell for less than $400 i dont think and it will have nowhere NEAR these specs. if you dont know how to build a computer yourself almost every major electronic store will do it for you.
Hope this helps!

I've found the most affordable is to get a "bare bones" system (just get the casing + internal components, hook it up to your existing monitor........ buy the operating system seperately and install it yourself).

Try looking on Ebay, or in local independant computer store..... I got my current computer off ebay through this guy:

I'm currently in the process of building it's replacement.. estimated cost <£500 with specs:
- Intel Celeron D 3.33GHz processor
- 1GB of RAM
- 120GB Primary HDD
- Possible addition of a 80GB second hard drive, since got a spare one I tried fitting in my current PC but yet to get working
- nVidia GeForce6200 PCI-Express Graphics card.

Haynes Publishing, more famous for their car repair manuals also do this book on how to build your own PC:

I found them by accident 5 years ago and I have bought from many sellers including a few systems from Alienware. They are better then Alienware and much cheaper. Customer service lacks, and the test time was a pain, but for performance and cost - best company on the market. BTW - DELL SUXS!
