Definitely be completely fluent in two or more languages. You will need understanding of metaphors, idioms, and slang in the languages you speak, since these often get mistranslated.

You'll also need the ability to hear a language, and be translating it verbatim as it is spoken. I know that the US government offers courses in translating and linguistics in some of the military programs. You could find something of that nature to help get you started.
